What kind of things do you do for diversity?

BCC has a Diversity Council to help promote awareness as well as generate and implement new initiatives. Is is made up of the following sub-committees: Recruiting/Retention/Training, Internal Communications, Global Cultural Awareness/Sensitivity and Work-Life Balance. We also utilize minority recruiters and attend minority-recruiting consortiums and conferences.

    Tell me more about your Daycare Facility.

    The Bayer Daycare Facility is located on the Morristown, NJ campus and is managed by Bright Horizons Family Solutions for children 6months - 5 years of age. Bright Horizons is the world's leading provider of employer-sponsored child care, early education and work/life solutions. The center adheres to the standards of excellence set by the National Association for the Education of Young Children.

    What is it like to work for a German company?

    Actually, working for Bayer is very much like working for any other company in our industry. We hire the best available talent and give them the opportunity to provide results. The majority of all strategic issues are decided with the U.S. company, as are all operating issues. Given our non-U.S. origins, there is probably a greater emphasis on awareness of international issues, and a desire to share synergies and talent across international borders.

    Tell me more about the organizational structure.

    In January 2005, Bayer Consumer Care completed its acquisition of Roche Consumer Health (RHC). As a result of the merger, Bayer now ranks among the top three OTC consumer health organizations in the world, with a presence in more than 100 countries.

    Yes. This has been demonstrated in a number of ways: investment in advertising and promotion at levels greater than industry averages; investment in R&D, clinicals and new product initiatives; a willingness to invest in acquisitions and joint ventures as demonstrated by the Roche acquisition.

    Career Track & Training

    What Brand will I work on, and will I know ahead of time?


    When hired into the Brand Management department, you could have the opportunity to be assigned to any of our categories. Business needs, which continually change, determine where our openings will be, so most likely you would be informed a few weeks prior to starting.


    Length of progression (Assistant Brand Manager to Brand Manager).

    The length of time it takes to progress from one position to the next in brand management is a function of both the readiness of the individual and the availability of positions. Promotion timing guidelines are: Assistant Brand Manager to Associate Brand Manager - 12 to 24 months; Associate Brand Manager to Brand Manager - 24 to 36 months.

    What training will I receive?

    Bayer invests in the professional development of its employees through focused programs (The Marketing Success Path) and a wide range of training courses for continuous improvement. The formal training courses are offered through "Bayer University", which was created within Bayer Consumer Care to provide employees at all levels of marketing with skills training to enhance their professional development.

    Does Bayer have a mentor program? Bayer Corporation is currently piloting a mentor program that may be rolled out to a broader audience. Marketing staff would be highly likely to have the opportunity to participate in this program.

    Job Requirements

    What are the responsibilities at the Assistant Brand Manager(ABM) level?


    Working under direction of a Brand Manager you will have the opportunity to take on a high level of responsibility and make significant contributions as a member of the Brand Team. Some examples are:

    • Execute consumer-marketing strategies by working collaboratively with consumer promotions and sales.
    • Assist in advertising plans including copy review and updating the agency on business developments.
    • Manage packaging development to ensure consistency with the brand's strategic direction.
    • Leverage analyses to update management on the business.
    • Analyze brand and competitive environment to identify opportunities, implications, and risks.
    • Work jointly with the forecasting manager on developing the demand outlook for the Brand's product.
    • Work with the finance manager to recommend and manage the brand's budget.

    What type of candidates are you looking for?

    Bayer is looking for innovative leaders who embrace ownership and accountability by challenging existing paradigms to win in the marketplace.

    Must have MBA in progress.

    Critical skills include creative thinking and problem solving, strong analytical skills, effective communication and a team player.

    Is a second language required?

    Because Bayer is a global organization with international opportunities available, we would prefer - but do not require - knowledge of a 2nd language.

    How many candidates will be hired?

    Bayer's goal will be to hire 3-4 entry-level Marketing employees.

    International Opportunities

    What International opportunities are available?

    The Bayer Group is one of the 100 largest companies in the world. Annual revenues in 1999 were $27 billion. With a presence in more than 100 countries around the globe, the Bayer Group has a wide variety of job opportunities. Specifically within Marketing, most countries have a General Manager supported by a staff of positions. One of the key positions on any county staff is the Marketing Manager for the country. Within Consumer Care, typically each of our major brands will have Brand Managers in each country where we are represented. The Bayer Group has a track record of rotating skilled managers throughout its global organization. Talented marketing staff is especially likely to find that International opportunities are available to them.

    What is a possible International assignment I could have?


    While an International assignment could be constructed at virtually any level, they are most commonly identified for early and mid career employees. A very common assignment would be as a Brand Manager or Assistant Brand Manager on a brand such as Bayer Aspirin, Alka-Seltzer, One-A-Day Vitamins, or Canesten, an anti-fungal compound that Bayer markets to the woman’s health and foot care segments.

    At what level (Assistant Brand Manager, Brand Manager) would I be given this assignment?


    Normally an employee would not commence an International assignment until he or she had been with Bayer for 2 to 3 years. Regardless of what your “career country” is within Bayer (e.g. US, Germany or another), this amount of time is usually necessary to get a basic grounding in company policies and culture. For an entry level MBA, this time period is also one when you are building your brand management/consumer packaged goods marketing skills. Commencing an International assignment after this period of time means that you will be able to transfer some US marketing know-how into your new assignment in another country, as well as be open to learn what the international experience can teach you.

    Am I going to be reqired to take an International assignment?

    No. When we hire new, talented employees at Bayer Corporation, we’re typically looking for someone who is willing to consider an International assignment. However, many things can change an individual’s career objective over time. An International assignment is a terrific opportunity for career growth, given today’s global economy. However, excellent career prospects would still exist within Bayer even though your career interests may become limited to domestic (US) opportunities.

    How long is a typical International assignment?


    Assignments are normally 2 to 3 years in duration. The first half of the assignment is usually invested in the individual’s cultural and business learning curve. The second half of the assignment is usually when the payoff begins to develop for the company. For this reason, we normally target on a three-year assignment, with two years as a minimum commitment. Of course, career opportunities and company needs occasionally shorten or lengthen this time frame.

    Does Bayer teach a 2nd language if it is required for an international assignment?


    Yes, Bayer offers language training through in-house and external sources.
